Qatar is known for its rich oil and gas reserves, but it's also home to a talented athlete who wears many hats - Nasser Al-Attiyah.

Published on October 1, 2019, at 06:00 AM, Al-Attiyah is a 48-year-old Qatari who has made a name for himself as a champion rally driver, celebrated Olympian, and Sheikh.

He claimed the silver medal in shooting at the 2012 Olympic Games in London and has also had success in the World Rally Championships and the Dakar Rally.

Al-Attiyah made his debut in the Dakar Rally in 2004, finishing 10th overall, and has since become the reigning champion, winning the event in a Toyota Hilux Pick-Up truck.

As a cousin of the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Al-Attiyah's achievements are a testament to the country's rich sporting heritage.

But Qatar's desert climate can be unforgiving, with temperatures often reaching as high as 50 degrees Celsius.

On Sunday morning, the temperature rose to 47 degrees Celsius, forcing teams and officials to take precautions to stay cool.

Despite the heat, Qatar is also known for its affordable food, with a variety of options available, including American fast food chain Kentucky Fried Chicken.

A lunch pack of French fries and chicken from KFC will set you back around 25 Qatari Riyals (Sh713), while refilling a 12 kilogramme cooking gas cylinder will cost around 15 Qatari Riyals (Sh468 or 54.6 US dollars at the current exchange rate).
