Published on October 1, 2019, a Kakamega death row convict, Benedicto Kwarula Ingosi, has been granted a reprieve after the High Court substituted his death sentence with a 20-year jail term.

Ingosi, 51, was convicted alongside two others for jointly robbing Manase Wachira of Sh8,000, a bicycle, and an assortment of shop goods worth Sh16,000 on November 9, 2004, at Mukango village in Kakamega South District.

During the robbery, Ingosi and his accomplices used actual violence, cutting the complainant severely, and Wachira sustained grievous harm, including a fracture of tibia and fibula bones.

Ingosi had served a 14-year sentence and had reformed while in custody, but Justice Jesse Njagi noted that the sentence served was insufficient, given the severity of the offence.

The High Court allowed Ingosi's petition, substituting the death penalty with a 20-year jail term.
