On September 30, 2019, Norwegian Jonny Andersen officially exited his position as managing director of the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), paving the way for a new leadership.

As per a memo issued by KAA chairman Isaac Awuondo, Alex Gitari, the current general manager for finance, has been appointed as the interim managing director, effective October 1, 2019.

Mr. Gitari brings with him a wealth of experience in development banking, accounting, finance management, policy formulation, and strategic partnerships, among other areas.

Mr. Andersen had announced his intention to leave the parastatal in August, before the expiry of his term in November. He had joined KAA in July 2016, replacing Yatich Kangungo as acting managing director.

During his tenure, Mr. Andersen faced several challenges, including a protracted recruitment process that was marred by claims of political interference. He had beaten five other candidates, including Mr. Kangugo, to secure the position.

One of the notable incidents during his tenure was in June, when MPs questioned him over the return of Sh1.2 billion earmarked for the renovation of eight local airstrips in the 2018/19 financial year.

Mr. Andersen's exit marks the beginning of a new chapter for KAA, with the recruitment process for a substantive managing director set to commence on October 1, 2019.
