On September 30, 2019, Jumia Food, a leading food delivery app, rolled out a subscription-based service to stay ahead in the competitive market.
The new service, Jumia Prime, allows customers to pay a standard fee for one, three, or six months and receive unlimited deliveries on all orders placed on the Jumia Food app or website.
According to Shreenal Ruparelia, managing director of East Africa On-Demand Services at Jumia Food, Jumia Prime is designed to provide a unique value proposition to customers by eliminating delivery fees.
"This is also our way to expand and innovate into new areas where we continue to educate customers on the benefits of ordering online as well as building an offering that serves the local market needs," Ruparelia said.
Notably, Jumia Prime is not limited to food delivery but also covers alcohol, groceries, shopping, and pharmacy needs.
The subscription fees for Jumia Prime are Sh500 for one month, Sh1,200 for three months, and Sh1,800 for six months.
As of now, Jumia Prime is available in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Ghana, with the company planning to expand its services further.
