On Sunday, a devastating ferry accident occurred in Mombasa's Likoni area, claiming the lives of a 35-year-old woman and her four-year-old daughter.

The accident happened at 6pm when a saloon car, a Toyota Isis with registration number KCB 289C, slid off the MV Harambee ferry and plunged into the Indian Ocean.

According to police in Likoni, the car was carrying Mariam Kigenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu. Initial reports had indicated that the vehicle had three occupants, but police have since clarified the correct number of passengers.

Ms. Kigenda's car reversed while the ferry was midstream, causing it to fall into the Indian Ocean, as per a police report on the incident.

As of Monday afternoon, the bodies of the deceased and the vehicle were yet to be retrieved due to the unavailability of oxygen tanks. Plans were underway to have the Kenya Navy assist in the operation.
