On September 30, 2019, a military base in Somalia where US soldiers train commandos was attacked, causing casualties, reports say.

The base, located about 100 kilometres west of the capital Mogadishu, is used as a launch site for US drones and a training centre for US special forces, Somali special forces, and Ugandan peacekeepers.

Local residents reported heavy blasts and gunfire at Baledogle airport in the southern Lower Shabelle region, where the attack occurred.

The al-Shabaab militant group claimed responsibility for the attack, which is linked to al-Qaeda.

Separately, an Italian military convoy was hit by an explosion in Mogadishu itself, but no casualties have been reported.

The US has sharply increased its air strikes against al-Shabaab since President Donald Trump took power, leading officials in Somalia to say the group has increased its attacks in Mogadishu as retaliation.
