On September 30, 2019, Al-Shabaab militants launched a surprise attack on a United States airbase in Somalia, causing significant damage and chaos.
A Somali elder close to the scene of the attack, Mohamed Adan, described the incident to AFP, saying, "Two heavy explosions occurred, the first one bigger than the other. There was also a heavy exchange of gunfire after the blasts but we don't know about the details."
Separately, a convoy carrying European Union military advisers came under attack in the capital Mogadishu, leaving casualties. A Somali security officer, Omar Abikar, confirmed the incident, stating, "there are casualties".
