Kenya's Ruth Chepngetich Wins Women's Marathon at 2019 IAAF World Championships

On a sweltering night in Doha, Qatar, Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya battled through humid conditions to claim the women's marathon title at the 2019 IAAF World Championships on September 29, 2019.

Chepngetich, the world number one, dominated the field with a blistering pace, leaving behind a loaded group of runners, including Ethiopian Ruti Aga, Kenyan-born Bahrainian Rose Chelimo, and Namibian Helalia Johannes.

With a time of 2:32:43, Chepngetich pocketed Sh 6.2 million (USD 60,000) and gave Kenya their fifth gold in the event.

"I am feeling good... I am so happy and I thank God for the win, it was a tough race, I ran in Dubai Marathon and the weather was almost the same like here so it was not bad for me," Chepngetich said after the race.

Chelimo, who settled for silver with a time of 2:33:46, praised the challenging conditions, saying, "I was not expecting to be a medallist in such tough conditions."

Two-time world champion Edna Kiplagat, 39-years-old, faded to fourth in a Season's Best time of 2:35:36.
