On September 28, 2019, Liverpool reported Manchester United to the English Football Association (FA) over offensive chants made by United fans during a Women's Super League match at Leigh Sports Village.
The chants, which included references to the Hillsborough disaster, were reported by Liverpool in a post-match report to the FA.
The FA has confirmed that it is investigating the matter, with concerns raised over chants that were perceived as anti-Scouse and derogatory.
Manchester United won the match 2-0, with around 2,800 fans in attendance.
When asked about the chants, Liverpool manager Vicky Jepson said that her players were prepared for a hostile reception and that the chants did not bother her.
“These chants about Scousers robbing and stuff – bring it on,” Jepson said. “We prepared for that. They’re notorious for their chanting but it didn’t bother me. My players and my staff were ready for that, so when they were shouting my name and shouting stuff, I just smiled. The main thing is that we came here to compete.”
The Hillsborough disaster occurred on April 15, 1989, when 96 people died in a crush at Hillsborough Stadium during an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.
Manchester United has since released a statement saying that the club is aware of the reports and is looking into the matter.
