On September 30, 2019, a devastating ferry accident occurred in Mombasa, resulting in the loss of three lives.

A saloon car had been on board the MV Harambee ferry, which was traveling from the mainland to the island at around 6:15 pm.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the car reversed, causing the vehicle to plunge into the ocean midstream.

The Kenya Ferry Services stated that the cause of the accident could not be immediately established.

Despite search and rescue efforts being underway, neither the wreckage of the car nor the three occupants had been retrieved by Sunday night, due to high darkness in the area.
