On September 29, 2019, a devastating accident occurred at the Likoni ferry channel in Mombasa, where a vehicle plunged into the Indian Ocean. The identities of the two occupants of the vehicle have now been confirmed by police.
Mariam Kigenda, 35, and her 4-year-old daughter Amanda Mutheu were inside the vehicle when it lost control and fell into the ocean. Amanda was a pupil at MM Shah Academy in Mombasa.
The school authorities confirmed the loss of the pupil through a text message sent to parents. The ill-fated vehicle, a Toyota ISIS (reg no. KCB 289C), was the last to board MV Harambee.
According to Likoni OCPD Benjamin Rotich, the vehicle lost its brakes and reversed just before the ferry docked. The rescue operation was called off on Sunday due to darkness, but efforts are ongoing to recover the bodies.
