On a fateful Sunday evening in September 2019, a devastating incident unfolded in Likoni, leaving residents in horror as a saloon car carrying a mother and her two children sank into the deep waters.
According to eyewitnesses, the car remained afloat for a while before it completely sank, with no rescue efforts being made by the Kenya Ferry Services.
Kenya Ferry Services later issued a statement on their official social media pages, confirming the accident and assuring the public that investigations were underway to determine the cause.
However, it has been reported that the ferry, MV Harambee, had been operating without insurance for years after being de-registered from Lloyd's register due to being deemed unseaworthy.
At the time of the incident, the coxswain had left the rear ramp down, contrary to the norm, allowing the car to roll back into the sea.
Despite the tragic loss of life, Kenya Ferry Services announced that they were back to business as usual, with no apparent plan to prevent such accidents in the future.
