On a sunny day in Nairobi, we had the chance to experience the ancient Chinese martial art of Tai Chi. With its roots in self-defense, Tai Chi has evolved to offer numerous health benefits, making it a popular choice for Kenyans seeking balance and harmony in their lives.

Unlike other martial arts that emphasize fighting and physical strength, Tai Chi takes a unique approach. It is based on the principles of Yin and Yang, where everything exists in a delicate balance of opposites. Yin represents the negative aspects, such as darkness and cold, while Yang represents the positive aspects, like light and warmth.

The Power of Yin and Yang

Our beginner Tai Chi class learned about the circular movements of the art. By absorbing and deflecting an opponent's energy, a skilled practitioner can redirect it and gain the upper hand. The greater the force exerted, the greater the chance of success.

While Tai Chi was originally developed for self-defense, it is now widely practiced for its psychological and physical benefits. It is especially recommended for older people and those with heart problems or arthritis. The gentle and flowing movements of Tai Chi bring about serenity and tranquility, making it an excellent choice for those seeking relaxation.

In Nairobi, Tai Chi can be practiced at the Creative Nest in Karen and with master Li in Lavington. Whether you're looking to improve your physical health or simply find inner peace, Tai Chi is definitely worth trying.
