Published on September 30, 2019, a chaotic scene unfolded at Kamiti Maximum Prison in Kenya as warders attempted to mop up contraband in cells.
According to sources, the trouble started after some inmates resisted the surrender of contraband, leading to a violent confrontation with prison officers.
Kamiti, Kenya's largest maximum-security prison, is equipped with cameras and hawk-eyed guards who screen people, vehicles, and goods entering the facility.
Despite these security measures, contraband continues to be smuggled into the prison, with sources suspecting the involvement of corrupt warders and managers.
Previous mop-ups have yielded a range of illicit items, including laptops, internet modems, sim cards, mobile phones, cigarettes, hard drugs, knives, and other dangerous materials.
