On Sunday evening, a Toyota car slid off the MV Harambee ferry and sank into the Indian Ocean in Mombasa, leaving three occupants in a precarious situation.

According to Kenya Ferry Services (KFS), the accident occurred at 6:15 pm when the car reversed and plunged into the ocean midstream.

Rescue operations were launched immediately, but were called off about an hour later due to darkness, KFS stated.

Commuters on the ferry watched in horror as the car sank into the ocean several meters from the vessel, as captured in videos shared on social media.

Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing, with neither the car nor its occupants having been retrieved.

Kenya Red Cross Mombasa County Coordinator Mohamed Rajab Said confirmed that there were three occupants in the car, including two female adults and a child.
