October 27th, 2017, marked a critical moment in Kenya's history as the country navigated the repeat presidential election. The situation was tense, with some media reports suggesting atrocities bordering on genocide were being committed. However, the reality was far from the truth.

Kenya remains a resilient and strong nation, despite the current tempestuous moments. Democracy is not a love affair, but rather a complex system of power that can contribute to conflict. The current events in Kenya are akin to labor pains, signaling growth and development. If handled judiciously, these events will strengthen the nation and give it more stamina to deal with future challenges.

The words and actions of the main protagonists – opposition leader Raila Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta – must be lauded for restricting the conflict to matters of law and procedure. Raila withdrew from the election due to the Independent Election and Boundaries Commission's refusal to undertake key reforms, while President Uhuru insisted that elections had to be conducted within the timelines set by the Supreme Court and the Constitution.

While the conflict has not degenerated into inter-ethnic conflict, the Luo community has suffered more losses in lives and disruptions. However, a comparative analysis between Kenya and other Eastern African countries reveals that Kenya is ahead in democracy and good governance. The conflict is, in itself, a testament to Kenya's broad democratic space.

Kenya's Judiciary is independent enough to nullify presidential election results, and the opposition can boycott elections without resorting to violence. In contrast, countries like Ethiopia, Uganda, Burundi, and Rwanda would have likely seen bloodshed if their opposition supporters had taken similar actions. As we speak, democracy is being tested in all Eastern African countries, with Kenya emerging as a strong beacon of hope.

Despite the current upheavals, Kenya will remain a resilient nation, with a broad democratic space and a people who are determined to move forward. The country's resilience is a testament to its strength and its ability to navigate even the most challenging situations.
