On September 30, 2019, Kamiti Maximum Prison was rocked by chaos and violent confrontation as warders conducted a mop-up operation to seize contraband in cells.
According to sources, the trouble started after some inmates resisted the surrender of contraband, highlighting the ongoing racket suspected to involve warders and managers.
Kamiti, Kenya's biggest maximum security prison, is equipped with cameras and hawk-eyed guards who screen people, vehicles, and goods entering the correctional facility.
Despite these security measures, criminals continue to sneak contraband into the facility, including laptops, internet modems, sim cards, mobile phones, cigarettes, hard drugs, knives, and other prohibited items.
