Published on September 30, 2019, a chaotic morning unfolded at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison as inmates protested a search for contraband.
According to Kenya Prisons Service spokesman Dickson Mwakazi, the inmates refused breakfast and became rowdy in protest, prompting officers to intervene.
"They refused to take the morning porridge and became rowdy to protest the search for contraband," Mwakazi said.
Officers on morning shift managed to regain control of the situation, locking all inmates in their cells to calm the unrest.
Similar incidents have occurred in the past, including a 2014 incident where prison officers fired in the air to disperse rowdy prisoners attempting to break out of jail.
Former Commissioner General of Prisons Isaiah Osugo had previously ordered the closure of the main canteen at the prison after discovering it was used to smuggle in contraband goods.
