On September 29, 2019, a wave of violence swept through the north of Burkina Faso, leaving a trail of death and destruction in its wake.

According to security sources, at least eight people were killed in two separate attacks, bringing the total number of fatalities in the region to 17 over the weekend.

The attacks, which were blamed on a long-running jihadist insurgency, took place in the provinces of Bam and Soum, with the worst incident occurring in Deneon village in Bam province.

Seven people were killed in Deneon when an armed group attacked the village at around 6:00 pm local time, said a security source.

A soldier was also killed when an army unit was attacked in Deou in Soum province, another security source confirmed.

The violence in the region has been ongoing for several years, with more than 585 people killed since early 2015, according to an AFP toll.

Groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State have been linked to many of the attacks, which have spread from the north to other regions in the east and west of the country.
