On September 29, 2019, police in Nairobi's Roysambu area apprehended Alex Opondo, a suspect in a cocaine trafficking case, shortly after he arrived from Uganda.

According to reports, the 2.5 KG consignment of cocaine was disguised as sugar and wrapped in a packet of soya beans.

Upon questioning, Opondo revealed that the narcotics were intended for domestic consumption.

The suspect is currently in police custody and will be arraigned in court the following day.

This arrest is part of a larger crackdown on drug trafficking in the country, which has seen several high-profile raids on suspects' homes.

Among those implicated in the trade are Mombasa tycoon Ali Punjani and controversial politician Stanley Livondo.

Notably, a significant cocaine seizure was made in 2016, when authorities arrested two suspects linked to a 100 kilogramme consignment of cocaine valued at Sh598 million, disguised as sugar.
