Kitui County is in a state of high tension after an armed gang attacked the territory of Governor Charity Ngilu on September 29, 2019. The attack occurred just days after the governor faced backlash for an audio recording in which she appeared to be inciting locals against Somali herders.
According to reports, the armed gang attacked a village in the eastern part of the county, killing a local businessman and kidnapping two people. The incident has left the community in fear, with many families refusing to return to their homes.
Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has condemned the attack, urging the national government and local security units to investigate the incident and apprehend the perpetrators. In a statement, she described the attack as 'madness' that 'has to stop.'
Ngilu's statement read: 'I am extremely saddened and dismayed at the banditry attack at the Muthumulani junction which falls on the Engamba and Twambui road of Endau location, Kitui East in which Mr. Kitonga Musembi, a businessman was killed. This madness has to stop.'
The incident has sparked concerns about the safety of residents in the county, with many calling for increased security measures to prevent similar attacks in the future.
