Published on September 29, 2019, the Coast region is gearing up for a crucial role in the 2022 elections, with an estimated 4 million votes up for grabs.

Traditionally an ODM stronghold, the region has been a key supporter of Raila Odinga, but recent developments have seen a shift in the region's politics.

Coast region's governors Amason Kingi and Hassan Joho are locked in a supremacy battle, with both leaders vying for control of the region's politics ahead of the 2022 elections.

Kingi has invited all Coast MPs and MCAs to a meeting to chart the region's political course, which is seen as renewing the supremacy battle with Joho.

The meeting comes after President Uhuru Kenyatta met with six governors and elected leaders from the region to allay fears that his government was trying to weaken the economy of the region.

Kingi's meeting is the third in over a year, and it comes as the region witnesses renewed political activity and shift of political alliances.

There are talks of MPs from all six counties of the Coast region mooting the formation of a national party, signaling new political realignment ahead of 2022.
