On September 29, 2019, a tragic incident unfolded in the Bronx, New York City, resulting in the death of a police officer.
Officer Brian Mulkeen, 33, a member of the Bronx's anti-crime unit, was patrolling the Edenwald Houses area with his partner when they attempted to question a man around midnight.
The man fled, and officers pursued him on foot. During the struggle, Officer Mulkeen yelled, 'He's reaching for it! He's reaching for it!' as seen in body camera footage.
Gunfire ensued, and five officers at the scene fired at the man. A.32-caliber revolver was recovered from the scene.
Officer Mulkeen, who joined the force in January 2013, lived in Yorktown Heights with his girlfriend, also a police officer in the Bronx.
Chief Terence A. Monahan described Officer Mulkeen as 'a great cop dedicated to keeping this city safe.' He added that just the night before, Officer Mulkeen had arrested a man in possession of a gun in the same precinct.
