On September 29, 2019, Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia made a remarkable effort at the 46th Berlin Marathon, clocking 2 hours 1 minute 42 seconds to win the event. However, he fell just two seconds short of the world record.
Bekele's impressive performance was matched by Ashete Bekere, who won the women's race in 2 hours 20 minutes 14 seconds. Sally Chepyego of Kenya took third place, while last year's champion Galdys Cherono dropped out of the race due to an injury.
