Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia are facing a severe financial crisis after their main sponsor, SportPesa, withdrew its sponsorship of all sports activities in the country on September 29, 2019.
The drastic measure has left the club's players unpaid for two months, with their salaries still outstanding. However, in a surprising turn of events, Keroche Breweries has come to the rescue of the club, committing KSh 1 million to help Gor Mahia overcome the financial hurdle.
Of the KSh 1 million, KSh 600,000 will be used to settle the players' salaries, while the remaining KSh 400,000 will be channeled towards match logistics. The move is seen as a significant boost to the club ahead of their Caf Champions League match against USM Alger.
Gor Mahia's chairman, Ambrose Rachier, has confirmed that the club is in advanced talks with Keroche Breweries for a long-term sponsorship deal. Rachier expressed his gratitude to Keroche Breweries, saying, 'We are happy that Keroche has come on board ahead of our game on Sunday but this is just the beginning.'
He added that the club is still in talks with Keroche Breweries and hopes to finalize the deal by the end of the week. The KPL giants will be seeking to overturn a three-goal deficit suffered against USM Alger in the first leg of the fixture for a chance to qualify for the next round of the tournament.
