Kenya is on high alert after a suspected terrorist, Abdiwaahid Khalif Abdi alias Ise Tarabuun, flew into the country on September 24, 2019, from Somalia. The 2017 arrestee was reportedly in charge of Al-Shabaab operations in Mogadishu before his release.
According to police reports, Abdi was released from a Mogadishu jail in unclear circumstances and left for Nairobi via Salaam Airline. He was briefly interrogated at Mogadishu airport before being allowed to travel.
Police spokesman Charles Owino has asked Abdi to report to the nearest police station immediately and has urged anyone with information about his whereabouts to come forward.
The Somalia government's decision not to alert the Kenyan government about Abdi's travel plans has raised concerns about national security. The move comes amid heightened police operations in Kenya over fears of terror plans.
Authorities have warned Kenyans to be vigilant at crowded places, especially malls, as some terror cells are engaged in narcotic drugs to raise funds for their plans.
