On September 27, 2019, the world witnessed an extraordinary display of sportsmanship at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar.
Braima Dabo, a Guinea-Bissau athlete, came to the aid of his exhausted opponent, Johnathan Busby of Aruba, in the final minutes of their 5000m race.
According to Dabo, he realized he was not going to beat his personal record and decided to focus on helping Busby finish the race.
As reported by Reuters, Dabo said, "The main objective was to represent my country as well as possible and I'm happy I could help the other guy. I saw he was not running in the right way, he was leaning, I realised he wasn't going to finish."
Busby was in distress on the last lap of his 5,000m heat, and Dabo took his weight as the pair limped home to a rousing ovation at Khalifa Stadium.
Despite the air-conditioned stadium, the temperature was still a challenge for the athletes, and Busby's condition was a cause for concern.
Emergency personnel eventually appeared, and Busby was taken from the track in a wheelchair.
The heat was won by Ethiopia's Selemon Barega, who clocked 13 minutes 24.69 seconds.
