On September 27, 2019, Trade and Industrialization Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya announced that the government had zeroed in on a 52-acre quarry land on the outskirts of Nanyuki town as the new site for the revival of the Mountex Textile Industries.

Speaking in Nanyuki town, Munya revealed that the feasibility study for the revival of the industry had been finalized and that his ministry was awaiting funding from the Treasury to kick-start the project.

According to Munya, the government had settled on the Quarry land after it emerged that two other parcels of land intended for the same purpose had been sold off irregularly, but the matter was before court for arbitration.

He sought to allay fears that the court case could delay the revival of Mountex Industries, which folded in early 2000 and employed over 3,000 workers.

The new factory will have a specialized factory for the production of synthetic fabrics and will be the only one of its kind in East Africa.

Laikipia Governor Ndiritu Muriithi welcomed the move, saying it would spur economic growth in Nanyuki town and the entire Mount Kenya region by providing employment opportunities.
