On September 28, 2019, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha launched a crackdown on schools with substandard infrastructure, shutting down four schools in the process.

The move comes after a tragic incident at Precious Talents Top School in Dagoretti, where eight pupils died and 64 others were injured when a building collapsed last week.

Among the schools closed down include Greenfield School in Changamwe Mombasa, Pama Academy in Kangemi, Precious Talents Top School in Dagoretti, and a school owned by Christ Campaign Ambassadors church in Kayole.

According to reports, the school owned by Christ Campaign Ambassadors church was found to have a dilapidated building that housed 74 students, with boys and girls forced to sleep in the same room and use buckets and basins for toilets.

Speaking on the matter, Prof Magoha stated, "This problem is historical, unfortunately or fortunately I am the one who is now here in charge of education, we are going to deal with it squarely."

As part of the crackdown, education officials across all 47 counties have been directed to close down any unregistered school and transfer the students to a public school near them.

The directive also instructed officials to revoke licenses of all schools with substandard infrastructure, as well as those with unregulated increased enrolment and without TSC registered teachers.
