On September 28, 2019, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati made a shocking revelation about his role in validating McDonald Mariga's candidacy in the Kibra by-elections.
According to Chebukati, he was forced to clear Mariga's registration details, despite knowing that the soccer star was not eligible to contest in the elections.
"There are certain things someone does only when forced, but the truth will set us free," Chebukati said, reflecting on the pressure he faced.
Chebukati clarified that, as per the law, Mariga was a misfit in the Kibra by-elections and would not have been eligible to contest, even as a voter.
He expressed concern that Mariga's candidacy was a result of external forces, and that the IEBC had been denied the opportunity to discharge its duties freely.
Chebukati called on political leaders to shun this retrogressive culture and embrace honesty and truthfulness, so that the rule of law can apply to all.
He also urged Kenyans, particularly the Kibra residents, to vote wisely and choose a candidate who understands their challenges and is ready to address them.
