Published on September 27, 2019, the Kenya government's concerted efforts and intense lobbying by motoring stakeholders have successfully brought back the Safari Rally to the World Rally Championship (WRC) calendar.
President Uhuru Kenyatta's personal intervention and the government's allocation of Sh440 million to the cause have been instrumental in this journey that started in 2013.
As a WRC event, Kenya is set to benefit from massive media coverage and an influx of motoring tourists, with the country basking in the global limelight during the race.
However, a lot of work remains to be done to deliver a successful event, with the country's road safety standards coming under scrutiny during next year's Safari Rally.
Phineas Kimathi, CEO of the WRC Safari Rally Project, must ensure that work continues to ensure the rally's sustainability on the WRC calendar.
