Kenya is set to host the World Rally Championship's Safari Rally for the first time in 18 years, following a historic announcement by FIA President Jean Todt on September 27, 2019.
Speaking in Geneva, Switzerland, Todt revealed that the Safari Rally had been included in the 2020 FIA World Rally Championship, marking the continent of Africa's return to the world motorsport stage since 2002.
“On behalf of the FIA, I would like to announce that the Safari Rally has been included in the 2020 FIA World Rally Championship returning the continent of Africa to the world motorsport stage for the first time since 2002 and bringing back the heritage of the safari rally,” said Todt.
Kenya's Sports Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Amina Mohammed, welcomed the news, highlighting the economic benefits the event would bring to the country.
“The event will be broadcast to over 848 million viewers across the world, this is perfect opportunity to showcase various aspects of the country to the international community”, said Dr. Amina.
The WRC Safari Rally Project CEO, Phineas Kimathi, expressed gratitude to President Uhuru Kenyatta for his support and praised KCB Bank Kenya for their sponsorship.
Kenya now joins 13 other countries in the prestigious World Rally Championship series, with the WRC Safari rally scheduled to run from July 3rd-6th in Naivasha, Kenya.
