Kenya's Eunice Sum is ready to make a comeback at the World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, on September 27, 2019. The former world 800m champion will be the first Kenyan to compete in the event, which kicks off at the Khalifa International Stadium.
Sum, who clinched a gold medal in 2013 and missed the 2017 championships due to illness, is eager to reclaim her title. She believes the two-lap race is unpredictable, citing her past experiences where she pulled off surprises.
“In 2013 nobody expected that I would win but I did, in 2015 I was the favourite and I ended up with a bronze so for me I think this race is very tactical and anything can happen,” Sum said.
Sum will be the sole Kenyan representative in the women's 800m race, with the heats scheduled for 5:10 pm Kenyan time. She is ready for the challenge ahead, saying, “Being the only Kenyan in the race is a challenge but I am ready for the task ahead.”
Kenyan athletes will also compete in other events, including the women's 3000m steeplechase and the men's 5000m heats. The women's marathon final, featuring Edna Kiplagat, Visiline Jepkesho, and Edna Kiplagat, is set to kick off at 11:59 pm.
