On September 27, 2019, the 2013 Moscow Worlds champion Eunice Sum of Kenya made a narrow escape to the 800m semi-finals at the Doha World Championships.
Sum, who initially seemed poised for a second-place finish in her heat, slowed down in the final stretch, allowing Shelayna Oskan-Clarke of Great Britain and Morgan Mitchell of Australia to overtake her.
Despite clocking a respectable 2:02.17, Sum was among the six fastest losers, securing a spot in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, United States star Ajee Wilson won her heat in 2:02.10, while Uganda's Halimah Nakaayi and Norway's Hedda Hynne finished second and third, respectively, to secure the other automatic qualification slot.
Uganda's Winnie Nanyondo had the fastest time in the six heats, winning her heat in 2:00.36 and launching her bid for the title.
