On September 27, 2019, speculation emerged that ANC's Eliud Owalo might be contemplating dropping out of the Kibra by-election in favor of Jubilee's McDonald Mariga.

According to sources, there are ongoing discussions to have Owalo back the former Harambee stars player, with everything allegedly finalized for a big announcement soon.

Owalo cited financial constraints and hostile ground as reasons for his surprise decision, which has left his close supporters in shock.

His decision comes after a rowdy ODM youth attack on his convoy near the Olympics area in Kibra last week, forcing him to flee for his life.

As Owalo was on a campaign trail, his convoy was blocked and he was accosted by the ODM youth, who were shouting ODM slogans and forcing him to get onto a motorbike to escape.

It is worth noting that Owalo resigned from ODM in August 2019 to join ANC and launched his bid against ODM's Imran Okoth in the Kibra by-election.

The ANC party mandarins and supporters have been in daylong meetings to dissuade Owalo from making what they consider a mistake.
