On September 27, 2019, the Athi River traffic police department implemented new rules to alleviate traffic congestion on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
Motorists can now breathe a sigh of relief as vehicles from Mombasa Road are allowed to join the Athi River feeder road through the Devki Junction, while those joining Mombasa Road from Athi River must enter the highway through the interchange junction.
The Devki Junction, previously a major contributor to gridlock and accidents, had no set rules of entry and exit.
Police have cautioned motorists against making U-turns when joining the highway, warning that those caught flouting the new rules will face punishment.
Trailer drivers and boda boda riders have praised the move, citing improved traffic flow and reduced accidents.
Ali Guyo, a trailer driver, said, "We have experienced a massive change in traffic flow courtesy of the Devki junction closure. We are so delighted we will now save fuel and time while using this route."
Edwin Kimanzi, a boda boda rider, added, "The danger of the overlapping vehicles was clear and boda boda riders were the most affected."
