September 27, 2019 - In a move that defies the US ban, Huawei Technologies has begun producing 5G base stations without American components. This development comes after the US blacklisted Huawei, limiting its access to critical components like microprocessors and Google services.
According to Huawei's Founder and CEO, Ren Zhengfei, the company has completed testing of these component-free stations in August and September and will start mass production in October.
With over 50 contracts secured across the world, Huawei is poised to increase its 5G station production as more countries introduce their 5G technology. The company has already secured deals with countries like Switzerland, the UK, and South Korea to supply 5G networks.
Interestingly, despite being willing to produce 5G technology without US components, Huawei's CEO still expresses a desire to use American parts, citing the importance of maintaining emotional ties with suppliers from the country.
Furthermore, Huawei is considering selling its 5G technology, including patents, code, and production rights, to Western firms at a one-time fee. The company is also open to licensing its 5G technology to a US company.
