On September 27, 2019, Mombasa Senior Resident Magistrate Martin Rabera made a significant order in a drug trial case. He instructed anti-narcotic detectives to replace Sh 77,000 of old generation Sh1000 notes with the new ones at the central bank before September 30.
The old generation Sh1000 notes, which will be obsolete after September 30, are exhibits in the trial of two suspects facing drug charges. The magistrate made this order following an application by Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecution Aloise Kemo.
Speaking to The Standard after getting the order, Kemo said most of Sh1000 notes being held as exhibit involving various cases in the region had been exchanged to meet the deadline. “I have instructed all prosecutors within my jurisdiction to ensure the old notes of Sh1000 being held by police detectives and ethics and anti-corruption commission EACC as exhibits exchanged with the new notes,” said Kemo.
He added that already the prosecutors in Kwale had complied and hoped those who had not applied will do so before the end of the month.
