Former Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe's burial site has been changed to his hometown of Zvimba, located about an hour from the capital city of Harare.

The decision comes two weeks after African leaders attended his State funeral at the national stadium in Harare, with President Uhuru Kenyatta among several Heads of State in attendance.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Information on September 26, the Mugabe family had expressed its desire to proceed with the burial in Zvimba, and the government was cooperating with the family to respect their wishes.

The change in burial site has been attributed to a rift between the Mugabe family and President Emmerson Mnangagwa, with Grace Mugabe reportedly at the centre of the dispute.

The family had maintained that their patriarch should be buried alongside his mother and brothers in the village where he grew up, citing a desire to be reunited with his loved ones.

Additionally, the family remains bitter over the ouster of the late Mugabe from power in 2017, which may have contributed to the change in burial plans.
