On September 27, 2019, the family of former Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru raised questions about Deputy President William Ruto's role in the former governor's burial arrangements.
At an ongoing inquest into Dr. Gakuru's death, a family representative, Martha Waweru, expressed surprise at the speed at which plans to bury the former governor were made.
Ms. Waweru questioned why the plans to bury Dr. Gakuru started immediately after his death, stating, 'Why was there a hurry to bury daktari (Governor Gakuru) and start the plans even before his body got cold? Investigations and enquiry on what had happened would have been allowed but instead you moved on swiftly.'
A witness, Mr. Wachira Keen, testified that it was DP Ruto who ordered politicians to start planning the governor's send-off at the Lee Funeral Home.
Mr. Keen stated, 'The deputy president joined us at Lee funeral Home and he told us to start the governor's send-off. We were many leaders at the mortuary including Mr. Sonko and Nyeri Senator Ephraim Maina.'
The inquest will continue on September 30 and October 3 when the remaining six witnesses are to testify.
