On September 26, 2019, Senator Kipchumba Murkomen filed a petition with the Senate, seeking an investigation into the cancellation of the Kimwarer and Arror Dam projects.
Murkomen argued that President Uhuru Kenyatta's directive to terminate the projects was unilateral and discriminatory to the residents of Elgeyo Marakwet, where the dams were located.
He questioned the motive behind the president's decision, pointing out that there were other dams in the country with similar issues that had not been terminated.
Murkomen also raised concerns about the composition and establishment of the Technical committee that compiled the report used to justify the president's decision, alleging that it lacked national outlook in its gender and ethnic representation, which is unconstitutional.
He warned the Senate against rushing to implement the president's directive, citing the potential for financial loss and the seeds of distrust that would be sown among the communities affected by the project's termination.
The Kimwarer and Arror dam projects were previously described as economically irrelevant and overpriced.
