Kisumu Police Commander Replaced Amid Public Backlash ¶
October 19, 2017
Titus Yoma, the Kisumu County Commander, has been redeployed amidst growing public discontent over his administration of the law. The move comes ahead of the October 26, 2017 presidential polls.
Yoma's redeployment is part of a broader shake-up of police commanders, with six officers being reassigned to different positions. The changes were announced by Joseph Boinnet, the Inspector General of Police.
Yoma has been replaced by John Kamau, who was previously serving at the Kenya Police HQs in Nairobi. The question remains whether Kamau will adopt a different approach to policing or follow in the footsteps of his predecessor.
Other redeployments include:
- Wachira Mathenge moving to Marsabit from Kilifi
- Ben Kogo being reassigned to Kilifi from Marsabit
- Lucas Ogala taking over as Officer Commanding Police Division in Mombasa
- Johnstone Ipara moving to Mombasa as county commander
The redeployment of police commanders has been met with a mix of reactions, with some seeing it as a step towards addressing public concerns over policing in the region.
