On International Maritime Day, celebrated in Mombasa County, Kenya's Shipping and Maritime Affairs Principal Secretary Nancy Karigithu emphasized the need to address the low number of females involved in maritime activities.

According to Karigithu, the government aims to empower at least 10,000 seafarers for the job market within the next five years.

She noted that one of the challenges women face in the blue economy sector is the mindset of the workforce and equipment that is not female-friendly.

However, Karigithu pointed out that recent partnerships, such as the one between the Kenya Shipping Line and the Mediterranean Shipping Company, have led to a number of women benefiting from targeted interventions.

Despite these efforts, women still face industry challenges, including biased remuneration and equipment that is not suitable for them.
