On September 27, 2019, a Ugandan court handed down a two-year jail sentence to Annet Namata, a mother of three, for forcing her stepdaughter to eat menstrual blood.

Namata pleaded guilty to the charges, saving the court time and earning a reduced sentence from the original 7 years.

Her husband, however, was not satisfied with the lenient sentence, having hoped for a longer jail term for his wife.

The court's decision was based on a report filed by Namata's husband, who had been tipped off by neighbors who witnessed her mixing menstrual blood with food for her stepdaughter.

Namata allegedly stated that she resorted to this act due to anger over the preferential treatment her stepdaughter received from her father.
