Kenya's Economic Challenges

Kenya's economy faces significant challenges, including a large trade deficit and high levels of unemployment.

According to the Economic Survey 2019, the country's trade deficit increased from Sh1.13 trillion in 2017 to Sh1.147 trillion in 2018.

The deficit is largely due to the importation of commodities such as rice, maize, sugar, and second-hand clothes, which are worth over Sh100.8 billion annually.

Creating Jobs Through Local Industries

Ms. Ngilu, the Governor of Kitui County, believes that building local industries is key to creating jobs and reducing the trade deficit.

She cites the example of the Kitui County Textile Centre (Kicotec), which was established in April last year to produce uniforms for national government administrators.

The centre has created employment opportunities for village boys and girls who have hardly gone beyond primary school.

Leadership and Job Creation

Ms. Ngilu emphasizes the importance of leadership in creating jobs and driving economic growth.

She quotes President Harry Truman, who said, 'progress occurs when courageous, skilful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for better.'

Ms. Ngilu has taken the courage to set up Kicotec, which has created employment opportunities for many young people in Kitui County.

Empowering the Labour Force

Ms. Ngilu believes that the labour force is the most important investment in any business.

She emphasizes the need to empower the labour force by providing them with the necessary skills and training to compete globally.

She also highlights the importance of creating a safe and healthy work environment and improving the welfare of employees.

Conclusion

Ms. Ngilu's initiative to build local industries and create jobs is a step in the right direction for Kenya's economy.

By empowering the labour force and creating employment opportunities, Kenya can reduce its trade deficit and drive economic growth.
