Published on September 26, 2019, China's economic rise has been marked by remarkable progress in poverty alleviation efforts.
The United Nations credits China with unshackling over 800 million people from poverty in the last 40 years, making it the world's second-largest economy.
President Xi Jinping's vision of 'no one left behind' in improving living standards and well-being has driven the state's efforts to eradicate poverty by 2020.
One such initiative is the partnership between the state and The Evergrande Group in anti-poverty campaigns in South West China.
Launched in 2015, the company invested 11 billion yuan in economic empowerment programs in seven counties within Bijie region, targeting 1.2 million poor people.
Close to 600,000 people have had their names expunged from the poverty line records, with the company aiming to liberate another 444,400 people by 2020.
Evergrande Group employed specific poverty alleviation mechanisms, including setting up industries, relocating the poor, and providing education and employment.
The company invested 4.8 billion yuan to build two of the largest vegetable and fruit bases in the southwest and established the largest cattle breeding base in the area.
Evergrande Group Chief Director Lu Xianwu said, 'So far, we have helped close to 1 million poor people through the development of vegetable farms, cattle ranches, and Chinese medicine and fruit enterprises.'
The company also established a breeding farm for 100,000 Angus cows and 500,000 beef cattle, alongside 100,000 breeding bases.
Evergrande Group relocated hundreds of thousands of poor households from the mountains to 12 descent immigrant relocation communities, built education and commercial facilities, and provided vocational skills training.
The company also established kindergartens, primary schools, a technical college, a nursing home, a children welfare institution, and a fully operational hospital for the locals.
