On September 26, 2019, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati made a shocking revelation about his role in clearing McDonald Mariga's candidacy in the Kibra by-elections.
Chebukati confessed that he was forced to validate Mariga's registration details, despite the soccer star being a misfit in the electoral system.
"There are certain things someone does only when forced, but the truth will set us free," Chebukati said, opening up about the pressure he faced.
According to Chebukati, Mariga's candidacy was against the law, and he was not eligible to vote or contest in the elections.
Chebukati also criticized politicians who have vested interests and force the IEBC to act against their conscience.
"The commission is unable to make any meaningful progress because we find ourselves forced to do things against our conscience," he said.
Chebukati called on political leaders to shun this retrogressive culture and embrace honesty and truthfulness.
