On August 26, 2019, a five-year-old boy was hit and left for dead by a boda boda rider in Kasarani. The incident was reported to Mwiki Police Station, but the police initially failed to seize the motorbike or arrest the rider.
According to sources, the motorbike was later impounded by officers from the police station on Monday, but the rider, Moses Karanja, claims he was not the one driving the bike at the time of the accident.
‘I had taken my motorbike to a garage at 8pm to have it repaired. I left it there and went back to wait for it to be fixed. When I returned, I found out that the bike had been involved in an accident, but I had no idea where or when it happened,’ Karanja said.
However, other sources identified the rider as a certain Nderitu, who is well known to police officers and was recently released from jail. The area residents also confirmed that Nderitu was the one who hit the young boy and fled the scene, but they are afraid to come forward and record a statement due to safety concerns.
The motorbike was insured on September 13, 2019, about two weeks after the accident occurred. Investigating officers have also recorded a statement from the mother of the five-year-old boy, who has been at Francis Community Hospital since the accident.
After a surgery at the hospital, the doctors found out that the boy had a broken left hand and serious head injuries. He also sustained a deep cut just above his right eye that had to be stitched several times. The boy was discharged from hospital on September 2, 2019, but unfortunately, the two have been detained at the hospital after they failed to raise the bill.
