On September 26th, 2019, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) executive board announced the appointment of Kristalina Georgieva as the new IMF Managing Director, effective October 1st, 2019.
Ms. Georgieva succeeds Christine Lagarde, marking a significant milestone as she becomes the first person from an emerging market economy to lead the IMF since its inception in 1944.
As Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva will also serve as the Chief of the IMF Operating staff and the Chief of the Executive Board, assisted by four deputy managing directors in the operation of the fund.
Ms. Georgieva brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as the Chief Executive Officer of the World Bank since January 2017 and as the interim president of the World Bank group between February 1st, 2019, and April 8th, 2019.
Her academic background includes a Ph.D. in Economic Science and an M.A. in Political Economy and Sociology from the University of National and World Economy.
