On July 14, 2018, a month before the alleged shooting of former Garissa county finance executive Idriss Mukhtar, a military spy drove a trader and a woman accused of the attempted murder to different spots in Nairobi.

The spy, who testified in court, revealed that he drove Mohamud Adan and Juliet Njoki, along with two other men, from Blue Hut Hotel in Ngara to South C. He then dropped the two men at City Stadium on the way back.

One of the men, David Mwai, allegedly committed suicide at the Parklands police station. Mwai had been hired to kill Idris Mukhtar, who was shot twice outside a mosque in Kileleshwa, Nairobi, on August 19, 2018.

The spy informed the court that Adan, a former colleague at KDF, had requested him to take him to South C to meet a friend who had conned him of his money. However, upon arrival, they did not find the alleged conman and returned to the hotel in Ngara before proceeding to Blacky's Restaurant in Kilimani.

At the restaurant, Mwai and the other man joined them, and Adan ordered drinks and food for them. Mwai and the other unidentified man left at around 9 pm, and Mohamud followed them.

Adan called the spy several times in the following days, but the spy was not interested because Adan was not following his advice to work with police to trace the man who had conned him.

Adan and Njoki have denied attempting to kill Idris Mukhtar and conspiring to kill lawyer Charles Kanjama. The two were arrested in connection with the alleged murder attempt.
